The Journey of SeaSaver: Our SEP Story!
Hi! We want to tell you about our awesome project called SEP (that's short for Social Entrepreneurship Program). It's super cool because we get to run our own business and help save the ocean at the same time!
How It All Started
Our teacher, Ms. Teevens, wanted us to have a unique opportunity that allowed us to deepen our learning and see the powerful impact we can all have on our community and global community. Through the program, Ms. Teevens met a really nice business person (Our business mentor) named Ian who helps us every Wednesday. He even helped us when he was stuck at home! He is teaching us all about building and running a business. He is teaching us about the meaning of a company name, branding, logos, mission and visions, but we will talk about that later.
Picking Our Mission
Did you know that the UN has 17 Global Goals that help make the world better? We looked at all of them and voted as a class on which one was most impactful to us. This was really difficult because there are so many goals that will have such a large impact on the world around us. We picked Goal #14, which is all about life underwater. We chose this because we learned that there's this HUGE pile of garbage in the ocean called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - it's bigger than some countries! That's crazy, right? We wanted to help fix that.
Our Business: SeaSaver
We called ourselves "SeaSaver" because we want to save the ocean! We picked a really cool charity called The Ocean Cleanup to give our money to. They're working hard to clean up all that plastic in the ocean and stop more trash from getting there - how awesome is that?
What We're Doing Now
Right now, we're working on some exciting stuff:
-
Just finished our logo
-
Figuring out what we're going to sell so that we can actually make money to give to the Ocean Clean Up
-
Learning how to tell people about our business
-
Finding out how real businesses work
Why This Is So Cool
The best part about SEP is that we're learning how to run a business AND help the planet at the same time. We're learning that even though we're kids, we can make a difference in the world. Plus, we get to work with Ian, who makes everything fun and interesting!
We can't wait to start selling our products and help clean up the ocean. Every time someone buys something from us, they'll be helping to save marine animals and make the ocean cleaner!
Why did we choose Ocean Cleanup?
We liked that they could clean up the ocean in a simple and easy way.
-
They are helping reduce trash from getting into the ocean not just cleaning up what is already there
-
Their goals are similar to ours
-
There is a lot of trash so they need help
